After successfully serving his apprenticeship, Ian was given a full time contract but he was unable to make the most of it as his first team chances were few and far between. He was a central defender who made his debut when he was still an apprentice but then he played just three times in the first team in the next two years, all of them coming in the 1980-81 Division Three championship winning season.
